Cathedral Illustrations:

I was given the task to produce a variety of Illustrations that represent the word Cathedral. For this task, I had to choose 3 types of lines that I produced for 101 Lines task. After completing this task, I chose three Illustrations that I believe are my best pieces of work. My first piece of work presents the side of a Cathedral. I like this Illustrations because I haven't just focused on the building itself, but I have thought about the scenery around the Cathedral as well. I wanted to show a gloomy atmosphere within this piece. I have done this by using the charcoal and pencil. I've applied charcoal to my work so it adds texture to the ground. I think that using this material for the ground was successful as it has also created the effects of negative spacing. I believe that I have used my pencil effectively to create a gloomy atmosphere by applying shading and tone to the sky. To add extra details to this scenery, I have drawn in leaves that have fallen from the tree. I believe that doing this has made my piece more effective as it communicates to the viewer what season it is. Also, the line work around the leaves is a visual metaphor based on how the lines imply the leaves movement. The other lines that I have applied are on the walls of the Cathedral and the stained glass window. I like how the Charcoal on the walls of the Cathedral look like bricks. Furthermore, I like how the charcoal has created texture. Finally, I think the lines on the stained glass window are successful because the lines vary based on the pressure I used with my pencil. This makes this successful as it suggests tone and where light and darkness may be reflected on the glass.

For my second Illustration, I decided to draw the whole Cathedral. Within this Illustration, I still continued to present a gloomy atmosphere. To suggest this, I used charcoal to make the sky look misty. For the ground, I made thin, short lines by using charcoal. I also applied these lines to the stained glass windows. I believe that these lines worked well because it adds texture. I like how the lines are spaced out so there is a use of negative spacing left on the ground. The final uses of linework that I added to this piece of work can be seen on the roof and walls of the Cathedral. What I like about this linework is how the rectangles overlap each other. I think the rectangles are effective because I have applied different amounts of pressure with my pencil. I decide the make them darker on the roof and lighter on the walls.

For my final Illustration, I decided to not draw anymore Cathedrals. Instead, I chose to draw prayer beads. I did this because the word Cathedral doesn't have to be a literal sketch of a building. Also, I decided to draw prayer beads so this Illustration can represent what religion means to a lot of people. For this piece, I wanted to communicate worship and how it can have a positive effect on others. To represent this positive energy, I applied lines around the cross. This can also imply that the cross is glowing.
I enjoyed producing these three Illustrations because it allowed me to focus on other elements and not just a Cathedral. I have learnt how Visual Communication is important. It can reveal to viewers the: mood, time of day, season or hidden meaning within an Illustration. However, to improve these Illustrations, I do believe that I should of tried experimenting more with a variety of materials.
