Popping Out: My eight panels
After producing my thumbnails and character designs, I began to create my eight final outcomes. When making these panels, I have continued to apply different uses of line work. Also, I've tried experimenting with a variety of mediums. For this final task, I decided to make a booklet.
For my first panel, I have shown my character on her way to post a letter. Within this panel, I've drawn the leaning tower of Pisa in the background. To add details onto the building, I have used pencil. I've used shading with this medium to suggest the uses of tone. Also, I've used pencil and fine liner to add a pattern of short lines to parts of the building. I've done this to add patterns and shadows. For the grass, I have added texture by using oil pastels. The last mediums that I've used is pen. This medium has added texture to the characters hair and clothing. To add texture to her clothing, I have used cross-hatchings. I like how the final outcome for this panel has turned out as there is a lot of uses of tone and texture. I think that this piece of work could of been improved by adding colour or texture to the sky.
My second panel shows how Rosie is asking an elderly couple for directions. I've visually communicated this by showing a speech bubble above Rosie's head. I like this piece because of the angle being presented. I have drawn Rosie in the bottom left corner facing towards the couple. I did this because I wanted this panel to focus on all three characters equally. Also, I believe that this angle works as it is much easier to visually interpret. For this panel, I've used the mediums: fine liner, pen, soft pastels, coloured pencils and oil pastels. I have applied all of these mediums to my work to add texture to the surroundings, clothing etc. However, when using the oil pastels for Rosie's hair, I also applied the uses of lighting. I believe that this panel is effective because I have used a range of mediums. To improve his piece, I should of added more details to the background.
For my third panel, I have shown how my character is now entering a woodland. Within this panel, I wanted to reveal that she is scared. To suggest this visually, I have tried applying what I learnt from the visual language lesson. I began this drawing by using simple shapes. I've drawn my character small and the woodland plants and thorns larger. I've done this so Rosie looks frightened and lost. This can make viewers feel sympathy towards her based on the visual language portrayed. The mediums that I've applied to this piece are: fine liner, coloured pencils, a highlighter, oil pastels and pen. I've added short mark makings under Rosie's feet to imply shadows. To make the woodland appear foggy and mysterious, I used pencil to add shading. I've continued to use pencil within this piece by adding layers of faint lines onto the trees bark. I've done this to add texture. To suggest more uses of texture, I used coloured pencil and oil pastels. I applied hints of green highlighter to add pattern. Lastly, I have applied pen in small parts of the background to add shadows behind the trees. I believe that this panel is successful because I've thought about visual language. To improve this piece, I could of added more shadows onto the ground to make it appear darker.
The next panel reveals how Rosie is about to enter a cave but she is scared as there is a bear inside. To visually show that she is scared, I've added wavy lines around her. I've done this to suggest that she is nervously shaking. The mediums used within this piece of work are: fine liner, coloured pencils, charcoal, watercolor, oil pastel, pen and pencil. I've used each of these mediums to suggest the uses of pattern, texture, colour and tone. I think that this outcome is effective because I have continued to experiment with different mediums and angles. I've drawn a close up of Rosie's face so that the panel focuses on her emotions. To improve this piece, I should of added mark makings on the grass to add texture.
For the fifth panel, it reveals how Rosie has gone through the cave and she is now proud of herself. This pride is visually shown by the rays surrounding her. These rays represent her confidence. The medium that I used for this is soft pastels. I think this medium has been applied effectively as the rays have hints of texture on them. I like this panel because I have shown how Rosie's confidence has developed. I have also suggested her confidence by showing that she has left her torch on the ground. For the cave, I have used charcoal. I've applied different tones by drawing a mixture of heavy and faint lines. To develop this panel even further, I believe that I should of added more detail to the background.
For the next panel, I have presented my character getting across a stream by sailing on a giant leaf. I believe that this idea is successful because it shows imaginative thinking. I've added patterns to my character by using felt tip pens. For the stream, I used blue pen. I've used this medium so I could show the current within the stream. I stained the background by using a tea bag. After the background had dried, I applied zig zag patterns on top by using pencil. This panel shows how I've continued to experiment with drawing from different angles. For this panel, I've drawn the angle from high up. I like how my outcome has turned out based on how it presents the uses of simple lines and marks. However, to improve my work, I could of added some trees to reveal more details about the environment my character is in.
For this panel, I have shown Rosie hiking up a mountain. To extend on the idea that she's hiking, I have drawn her holding a stick as she walks. At the end of the stick, you can see the letter. The mediums that I've used are: soft pastels and felt tip pen. I've used soft pastels to add a rough texture to the mountain. I continued using this medium by creating snowballs. Also, I used my finger to drag lines to suggest that it is windy and cold. I think that this is effective as the blue pastel fades. To develop this panel, I think that I could of drawn this panel from a different angle.
Lastly, my final panel shows how Rosie has finally posted the letter. Within this panel, I wanted to reveal how she is now feeling happy. To show this emotion, I've drawn her with her arms in the air whilst smiling. To extend this, I added yellow and orange rays around her to reveal how she is happy with what she has achieved. To form these rays, I put soft pastels onto a pritt stick lid and dragged it across the page. The other mediums that I've applied are: watercolor, pen, pencil, coloured pencils and oil pastels. I like how the oil pastels have added texture to the my characters hair. Also, this mediums has added lighting and shadows to the letterbox. To improve my outcome, I believe that I should of added bolder lines for the rays.
Overall, I liked producing this booklet because I've been able to experiment with different mediums and angles. This task has helped me to practise applying visual language. However, I do believe that I should of applied different mediums on each of the panels to show variation.
