Screen Printing:
Recently, for the Popping Out project, I have been experimenting with different techniques. For this lesson, I experimented with the technique of Screen Printing. I enjoyed this lesson as I was able to learn a new skill whilst using a variety of materials. The materials that I have used are: a baking tray, fabric, tissue paper, card and paper.

I like how my design has turned out on the baking tray as I've applied a dark, solid colour ink onto a shiny surface. Also, the colour of the baking tray doesn't draw your attention away from the design.

For my second piece of work, I printed onto purple fabric. I am happy with the final outcome for this piece as I wasn't sure if applying dark ink onto dark coloured fabric would be effective. I think that using the fabric has made this piece successful as it has added the uses of texture. However, for future lessons, I think I will try using lighter coloured fabrics as it would make my design appear much bolder.

Next, I tried printing onto tissue paper. I like how this piece has a simple black and white colour scheme. Another reason on why I like this piece of work is because the material has creases on it. These creases add some elements of texture.

For my fourth outcome, I have printed onto card. I chose coloured card as a certain colour may represent a particular emotion or season. I chose blue card as I wanted to suggest that the environment surrounding my character is cold and gloomy.

Lastly, for my final outcome, I chose to use paper. I chose to print onto paper so I could produce a simple design. However, I do think that I could of picked a more interesting material that would of added colour or texture to the illustration.

Overall, I think this lesson was beneficial as I had the opportunity to experiment with a range of materials and I was able to produce outcomes by using a new skill. Also, I believe that my character design for the Popping Out project has developed. Some parts of the character I have kept the same. Such as adding no colour to the jacket so I can evidence the uses of negative spacing. I am now going to continue to experiment with materials and techniques when I create my final eight panel outcomes.
