 On/Off  Project:

I was given the task to produce two final pieces. One piece representing the word 'on' and the other representing the word 'off'.' I enjoyed this task as it allowed me to think about a variety of ideas and how to effectively communicate these ideas visually. To represent these two words, I have used the topic of Make up and how it can affect a person's self -esteem. The 'on' illustration will show how putting on make up can make someone feel confident. The 'off'' illustration will reveal how taking off  make up can make that person feel insecure based on today's beauty standards. To develop my idea, I created two thumbnail sketches so I could see a visual representation of my idea. I believe that making these thumbnails has been useful as it has allowed me to pull apart and extend my idea. I've been able to extend my idea by thinking about what mediums I want to use and why. I did produce 3 other ideas. However, I chose this idea because it shows emotion and how people can put on a persona. 

For my two final outcomes, I have produced both illustrations on A4 paper in my sketchbook. I think that my outcomes are successful because I have used a variety of mediums. The mediums that I have used are fine liner, watercolor and pastel. Out of all the mediums that I have used for my outcomes, I think the pastels have been the most effective. I used fine liner and watercolor on the woman's hair but I do think layering the pastel on top added texture. I decided to add pastels to both backgrounds to represent the woman's emotions. The yellow represents her confidence when she is wearing make up. The blue shows how taking off her make up makes her feel insecure. To improve these Illustrations, I could of produced more rough sketches that reveal different layout ideas and how I could of communicated this idea in a way that may have been more inventive. Also, another way that I could of improved my outcomes is by experimenting more with mediums that are out of my comfort zone.

Screen Printing: Recently, for the Popping Out project, I have been experimenting with different techniques. For this lesson, I experimented with the technique of Screen Printing. I enjoyed this lesson as I was able to learn a new skill whilst using a variety of materials. The materials that I have used are: a baking tray, fabric, tissue paper, card and paper.     I like how my design has turned out on the baking tray as I've applied a dark, solid colour ink onto a shiny surface. Also, the colour of the baking tray doesn't draw your attention away from the design.  For my second piece of work, I printed onto purple fabric. I am happy with the final outcome for this piece as I wasn't sure if applying dark ink onto dark coloured fabric would be effective. I think that using the fabric has made this piece successful as it has added the uses of texture.                                                Popping Out: My eight panels After producing my thumbnails and character designs, I began to create my eight final outcomes. When making these panels, I have continued to apply different uses of line work. Also, I've tried experimenting with a variety of mediums. For this final task, I decided to make a booklet. For my first panel, I have shown my character on her way to post a letter. Within this panel, I've drawn the leaning tower of Pisa in the background. To add details onto the building, I have used pencil. I've used shading with this medium to suggest the uses of tone.                                5 Contemporary Artists that I like: Here is a list of 5 Contemporary Artists that I like based on their line work: Tim Burton- Before Tim Burton became a well known and successful film director, he started his career as an Illustrator.  I like Burton's artwork because he isn't afraid of experimenting with a range of materials. A lot of his work is produced by using: watercolours, pens, paints and pencils.
