Book Sources: Miyazaki (2014) The Art of Princess Mononoke To extend my research on Miyazaki for my essay, I have chosen another book that is about one of his films. This book focuses on the film called ' Princess Mononoke'. This film is set in the 14th Century. A demon attacks a village in northeast Japan. The Prince of the Emishi Tribe, Ashitaka, kills the demon. Ashitaka gets infected by an animal attack and tries to find a cure from a "deer-like-God" called Shishigam. Along the way, people try and bring down the wolf God Mono and his companion Princess Mononoke. This book contains: concept sketches, concept art, backgrounds, notes and cel art. The background art within this book has a mixture of simple and detailed designs. For example, pages 18-19 reveal simple pieces of line work that works well together as they add tone and texture to the sketch. To create these pieces, Miyazaki has used watercolor. He has used the watercolor effectively to form different hue...

Risograph Printing: For this lesson, I have learnt about and practised the technique of risograph printing. The design that I have made for this lesson links to the Local Folk task. However, this design is different to the original drawing based on how it has a cartoon style. The two colours that I chose for this print are bright red and aqua. I began my risograph print by choosing the colour aqua for the first layer. I think that this colour works effectively as it has highlighted a variety of bold and thin lines. Also, I think the aqua ink looks effective as it has given texture to certain parts of the clothing such as the trousers. For the next stage, I needed to apply the bright red ink. This piece of work did not turn out how I would of liked it to based on how the red ink is not in the right position on the face. Because certain elements have overlapped, I needed to alter the position of my design for the next print. Even though this design was not successful, it has h...

Cathedral Illustrations: I was given the task to produce a variety of Illustrations that represent the word Cathedral. For this task, I had to choose 3 types of lines that I produced for 101 Lines task. After completing this task, I chose three Illustrations that I believe are my best pieces of work. My first piece of work presents the side of a Cathedral. I like this Illustrations because I haven't just focused on the building itself, but I have thought about the scenery around the Cathedral as well. I wanted to show a gloomy atmosphere within this piece. I have done this by using the charcoal and pencil. I've applied charcoal to my work so it adds texture to the ground. I think that using this material for the ground was successful as it has also created the effects of negative spacing. I believe that I have used my pencil effectively to create a gloomy atmosphere by applying shading and tone to the sky. To add extra details to this scenery, I have drawn in leaves that have...

On/Off Project: I was given the task to produce two final pieces. One piece representing the word 'on' and the other representing the word 'off'.' I enjoyed this task as it allowed me to think about a variety of ideas and how to effectively communicate these ideas visually. To represent these two words, I have used the topic of Make up and how it can affect a person's self -esteem. The 'on' illustration will show how putting on make up can make someone feel confident. The 'off'' illustration will reveal how taking off make up can make that person feel insecure based on today's beauty standards. To develop my idea, I created two thumbnail sketches so I could see a visual representation of my idea. I believe that making these thumbnails has been useful as it has allowed me to pull apart and extend my idea. I've been able to extend my idea by thinking about what mediums I want to use and why. I did produce 3 other ideas. However, I ch...

Book Sources: Miyazaki (2005) The Art of Howl's Moving Castle To extend my research about the artist Hayao Miyazaki, I have read a book about his film called Howl's Moving Castle. The film is set in the late 19th Century in Europe. The 18 year old protagonist, Sophie, is put under a spell by the witch of the waste. This spell turns her into an 90 year old lady. In the film she meets a wizard named Howl. The film has received a Golden Osella Award. I like this book because it is full of illustrations and concept sketches. These sketches show clearly how Miyazaki begins his work process. The sketches appear to have been drawn in pencil. To add colour , Miyazaki has used watercolors. Within this book, I have seen two concept sketches that I like. Both of these Illustrate the moving castle. The first image shows a lot of mark making. I think that the marks work well because they add...
